Surviving Hurricane Ian

As most of you know, but cannot imagine until you step foot on Sanibel, the Island and golf course have taken a beating. We were punched hard in the mouth and are battered and bruised but most definitely NOT beaten. We have worked endlessly. First coming daily by boat to get the golf course free of all debris, we rebuilt the bridge on hole #6, gutted golf shop, restaurant and offices, fixed equipment and golf carts all in an effort to get the course in a playable condition under the circumstances. Our newly installed Paspalum Platinum green this summer held up well initially and are now recovering from the first four weeks after Ian with no irrigation, then watering with “salt water” and seven weeks without being able to apply chemicals or fertilizer. 

That being said, all 18-holes are NOW OPEN and there is public access to Sanibel. While we continue with the recovery battle, we look forward to anyone looking to play some golf and support those of us trying to survive on Sanibel. Since we currently have twenty-some carts in operation, I cannot open up the tee sheet online. Therefore, to reserve a starting time please send me a text to 239.822.1012 and include your name, number of players, walking or riding, and day and time you’re requesting. With no power in the building and no phones or point of sale, payment can be accepted by cash or check. Rates for golf are as follows and will include sales tax:

Riding - $60 for 18-holes (Includes sales tax & cart) 
Walking - $40 for 18-holes (Includes sales tax)

We also have some merchandise that survived on sale - $50 each for tops and bottoms or $120 for three (Includes sales tax). The complimentary water station was never found but you’re welcome to bring your own until I get electricity, or we have some beverages for purchase in the Golf Shop.

There are a few restaurants on the island that are open and would love your support after a round of golf.

Please just remember…..the golf course, with the new greens and plantings had never looked better before Ian. While we are doing everything we can to restore its condition of four months ago it will obviously take time. It’s getting better every week but in doing so, we must do things we normally don’t do this time of year – occasional aerifications and topdressing, irrigating during the day, etc. It’s not what it looked like before but we desperately need your help to continue the progress.
